FitUp

Pipe offset calculator for iPhone

The cut length for your pipe offset, with the take-outs and gaps already off

FitUp is a pipe offset calculator for pipefitters, welders, steamfitters, and plumbers. Type the offset center to center, pick the angle, the pipe size, and the elbow, and read the cut length to the nearest 1/16 inch. Both take-outs and both root gaps are already subtracted, and the formula is on screen so you can check it.

travel = offset × 1.414

FitUp's hands-on first offset: 20 inches at 45 degrees on 2 inch pipe, cut length 25 5/16 inches, travel 28 5/16, run 20, take-outs 2 x 1 3/8, gap 2 x 1/8, with the formula lines
The first offset you try in FitUp: 20 inches at 45 degrees on 2 inch pipe, cut length 25 5/16.

The problem

Offset math on cardboard, and a cut you hope is right

Offset times 1.414 on the phone calculator. 14.142 written on the side of the fitting box. Two take-outs off that, then two gaps, then 11.142 turned into a mark on a tape that reads sixteenths. Forget one take-out and the piece comes up long. Forget the gaps and the fit-up will not close. A rolling offset adds a square root and a second piece of cardboard, and it is usually the one somebody asks you to check.

FitUp runs the same steps in the same order every time and lists each one under the answer, so the number you mark is the number you meant.

What it does

Four tools: simple offset, rolling offset, take-outs, and the cut list

FitUp rolling offset screen: an 8 inch rise and 16 inch roll drawn as a box, true offset 17 7/8, cut length 22 5/16, travel 25 5/16, run 17 7/8, and the formula lines
FitUp simple offset at 22.5 degrees on the free tier: the offset diagram is drawn and the results sit behind a See the cut for 22.5 degrees panel with a Pro button
FitUp take-outs chart for butt-weld elbows: 90 LR, 90 SR, and 45 LR center-to-end values by pipe size from 1/2 inch, labeled default values
FitUp Job 1 cut list with two cuts, 25 5/16 and 22 5/16 inches, Share text and Share image buttons, and the line Verify measurements before cutting

Why it is different

A cut length, not just a travel

Many pipe offset calculators return the travel and the run in decimals and stop there. The take-outs, the gaps, and the conversion to a fraction are left to you, and that is where offsets go wrong. FitUp carries the answer all the way to the mark on the pipe.

  • The cut, not the travel. Travel minus the take-out at each end minus the gap at each butt weld, with every allowance listed under the answer.
  • A number your tape reads. Fractions rounded once, at the end, to the nearest 1/16 (1/32 with Pro), with the exact decimal in the formula line.
  • Your fittings. The take-out comes from the pipe size and elbow you pick. With Pro you can change any value to match the elbows on your cart.
  • The math in the open. The offset is drawn and labeled, and the formula line shows the multipliers (1.414 and 1.000 at 45), so a foreman can check it at a glance.
  • No bars needed. Every calculation runs on the phone. No account, no ads, and your jobs stay on your iPhone.

How it works

How to get a cut length for a 45 degree offset in three steps

  1. Measure the offset center to center

How far the line moves over, centerline to centerline, in inches and sixteenths. For a rolling offset, measure the rise and the roll instead.

  2. Pick the angle, the pipe size, and the elbow

FitUp pulls the take-out for that size from its chart and the root gap from your trade: 1/8 inch per joint for welded pipe, none for plumbing.

  3. Read the cut and save it

The cut length shows in green, rounded once to the nearest 1/16. Save it to a job and it lands on that job's cut list, ready at the saw.

Before you download

Questions fitters ask before they download

Does it take off the take-outs and the weld gap?

Yes. The cut length is the travel minus a take-out for each fitting and a root gap for each butt weld, and both are listed under the cut. The gap is 1/8 inch per joint for welded trades and zero for plumbing.

Which angles are free?

45 degree offsets are free with no limit. 11.25, 22.5, 30, 60, and any angle you type are Pro. On the free tier the diagram still draws for those angles and the numbers are blurred.

Will it work in a basement with no signal?

Yes. All the math runs on the iPhone. A connection is only needed to buy or restore a subscription.

Do I have to make an account?

No. There is no account and no login. Jobs and settings stay on your phone and go wherever your iPhone backup goes.

Does it check code?

No. FitUp is a layout calculator. It does the arithmetic and labels its take-outs as defaults to check against your fittings. Verify measurements before cutting.
